Teeth clenching truth
Hm, I'm feeling a bit strange now. I've been to the dental hygienist as well as to the dentist today. Been a while. (It's a new dentist, he's got the whole family now). Anyways, besides that having a cavity and gums that are disappearing (apparently due to brushing my teeth too harshly) it turns out that for my age, I've got an unusually high (developed) abrasion of "tooth bloom" (I can't believe that's the correct translation, in German it's "Zahnschmelz"...). He asked me if I clenched my teeth a lot...I said that to my knowledge in my sleep I do clench my teeth (my former dentist told me that it had to be that). The truth is, my jaws and teeth hurt me a lot. When I was younger, my lower jaw grew way too fast and kept pushing forward my upper jaw, leaving me in pain and not enough space between my teeth of both jaws (my dentist back then thought I'd need an operation where my lower jaw should be dislocated then pushed back to give me more space). Plus, I still have a retainer underneath my teeth of my upper jaw, leaving even less space. Basically, there's no space at all there :-s Often I even clench my teeth during the day, somehow trying to push back my lower jaw myself and trying to ease the pain. The dentist touched my jaws and told me that my jaw muscles were hard as a rock, and that that it wasn't good. They should be soft! I didn't know that. He also said that most probably during my sleep I was trying to deal with my stress ("Do you have a lot of stress? What do you study?" he asked me) and that clenching my teeth was the way I dealt with it. Apparently many people do this, only that in my case, it's really bad. Of course, the fact that my teeth are too close together also reinforces the clenching he said, so it's basically a vicious cycle (trust me, my teeth hurt me every day). Oh dear. He told me to get neck and facial massages, to practice more Yoga and relaxation, to avoid stress ("What? You do all that next to your studies? You should slow down..."). Hey, if I could pay it, I'd get a massage every day!
So, conclusion (after pondering on it and feeling miserable a bit): This upcoming final year, as it WILL be stressful (come on, final year is always stressful, there's no way around that. But there are ways to work against stress) I'll have to try to get some money in not only for just basic things as food and tuition fees, but also for Yoga classes and for things to pamper myself (sauna visits, entrance fee to the pool...). As for massages, I have my own personal masseur: My boyfriend :-D He's great! And especially that back twist he does...ah, like a miracle. If only I saw him more than once every two weeks, haha. I'm not worried about getting enough sleep, because I hate not sleeping enough, nothing worse than that feeling. Luckily I only have that feeling during AIESEC-conferences ;-) What it takes is just a whole lotta discipline from my side, that I set up a fixed schedule of classes, studying, working, AIESEC, and exercise/relaxation/sports, and that I stick to it!!

Sorry to hear about this. We have the same problem, although the intensity may not be the same. My Filipino dentist in Manila did say that I grind my teeth at night due to severe anxiety. I read in a blog last week that massage does help lessen the stress in the jaw area. It's good you have a bf to do that, but unfortunately, you see him only once in two weeks.
I'm going to meet my Swiss dentist for the nth time in November. It can be really stressful, these dental appointments.
Hope you will be delivered from the pain caused by your teeth and gums someday. I can empathize with you.
God bless.
